Incredible Hulk vs Hannah Montana

Monday, 7 December 2009

A very short brief for the student paper 'Flex' again, they asked for a pic of the Incredible Hulk smashing Hannah Montana in the face, with some red, in a rough square shape, & they got what they asked for lol ;P

It had a three day deadline but once I'd worked out I was gonna be brave & go with the birds-eye view & exaggerated perspective I really enjoyed it, I'm pleased with how it came out as well :)

'Flex' Newspaper Headers

Sunday, 29 November 2009

Some work that took me much longer than it should have.

I got asked to redesign the section headers for the Falmouth & Exeter student newspaper, Flex (which incidentally featured a picture of my ugly mug & my beer pump last issue!).
The paper's Arts section features a lot of illustration & the headers for their comments & letters pages already have figurative illustration on, so I wasn't as worried as I could have been about doing a job for a newspaper. It took me a loooong time to come up with ideas for these, & I still don't like a couple of them, so I was nervous about reactions to them. The chief editor seemed really pleased though, & now they'll be sitting pretty in every issue!

Finished just in time for Drawcember as well...

Skinner's Borneo Brew

Monday, 16 November 2009

This has been cooking for ages but I was waiting til it was done & dusted before I put it up.

I was soooo honoured that, through kind thoughts of the head of fx-pedition Martin, I was offered the chance to design the pump for the ale Skinner's Brewery were donating to the fx-pedition. The ale, Borneo Brew, is being sold in pubs & bars in Falmouth til summer to raise cash for the expedition, with my orangutan adorning all the beer pumps!

The launch party was held up at the Skinner's brewery in Truro, & was possibly the most fun ever, the pump looks great in the flesh & I was incredibly honoured to be presented with a poster of my artwork signed by the CEO of Skinners, Steve Skinner himself! I also drank way too much ale & had my photo taken with the wonderful fx-pedition team a lot.

More recently the team took the beer & some serious promo skillz to the RGS expo in London, where they impressed the legend that is George McGavin to become the first patron of the expedition! Also there's an awesome photo of him touching something I drew ;D

Pink B*tch

Tuesday, 10 November 2009

SUCCESS I inked the whole thing with brush-pen & it looks good!! It actually looks close to what I'm aiming for with my inks, it's fairly bold & graphic but without comprimising form...the ink doesn't conform to the light source, though, so that's something for next time. Next time!!

Colour is all digital, I wanted a block-print style mark to the tones, which I think works really well with the style of inking.

I love food, I think it's a very fundamental part of being human & it's power is often overlooked. It's affect on our environment & climate change is huge, half the world starves while the other eats itself to death, more & more people have eating disorders & unhealthy relationships with body image, self esteem, & food.
I'd rather people made up their own minds about exactly what the illustration is doing, but I'll say I'm enjoying how grotesque it is ;P

"Twin"/ films are really fun

Tuesday, 8 September 2009

At the very least, this is entertaining. It's just not the kind of entertainment we were aiming for ;P

This was my first attempt at being involved in filmmaking, from back in May or June of this year. I co-wrote, co-directed & did the storyboards the film was *meant* to be filmed from. The whole thing took about a week from starting to write it to the end of editing & sound work, so it was awfully planned & terribly rushed (my excuse for it being a bit...rough around the edges ;P)
It was the most awesome fun I've had doing anything in ages, though, so I've got together a group to work on a film that I'll be totally directing :D We've nearly finished writing it, so then it can go to the set & costume designers & hopefully we'll be ready to shoot in early October!! :D

Making films is incredibly good fun.

FXU Diary Covers '09/10

Sunday, 30 August 2009

One thing I really wanted last year, but didn't get, was the diary cover job. I got it this year!

It was kinda a weird one, cos I did all the designs then stopped it, after I decided that doing work for other people to look at wasn't good for where I'm at right now. I'm just enjoying being very free to find myself & my passion without outside stimuli or interference. Anyhoo, a little while after this the new welfare officer asked specifically for designs for the diary as they hadn't had any, & I guess I gave a mental shrug & finished them off anyway. They were low stress, I made them out of paper cut-outs & a lotta Photoshop work. I wasn't expecting to get chosen, but it's fab, cos now they're giving me TWO of my limited edition FXU hoodies as well as a free diary!

I'm praying they look good in print, but it'll be a while til I get myself a copy so we wait :)

The wolves & the worse-than-wolves attacked the palace...

I was so rushed with this! I got a rush rework request of some old work & left this til really late, it took me around 5 hours I think. I really want to enter more IF topics though, so I figured the effort was worth it. I enjoyed it; IF is like half work half fun, very inspiring & a wonderful place to try out new things. Here's to many more IF entries from me we hope!
I was doubtful of going too far down the Asian route, but it just sort of came out that way & I kinda liked it ;P
